CoLAB AccelBio has secured its first European-funded project by joining IMPACT through the Hop-On mechanism.
IMPACT is an EIC Pathfinder initiative with an ambitious goal: to pave the way for novel therapies for major cardiovascular diseases, by implementing an AI-based integration of clinical and multi-omics data from patients with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM).
ACM is a genetic condition associated with ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death, particularly in young people and athletes. As no effective disease-modifying treatments are currently available, IMPACT aims to strengthen the understanding of genotype–phenotype relationships by combining large-scale patient -omics with structural and functional data from in vitro and in vivo models.

In a groundbreaking project funded by the La Caixa Foundation, AccelBio and Marc Veldhoen’s team, from GiMM, have joined forces to explore a novel strategy for selectively modulating T cell responses. Infectious and inflammatory diseases, whose global prevalence is on the rise, remain among the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Many of these conditions are linked to the activity of T cells, a type of white blood cell critical for coordinating immune responses against pathogens. However, T cells can sometimes become overactive, leading to severe conditions such as fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma.
Current treatments often rely on broad-spectrum immunosuppressive drugs, which, while effective, come with significant side effects and an increased risk of infections. This highlights the urgent need for therapies that can selectively inhibit T cell activity without compromising the overall immune response.
Marc Veldhoen’s team has identified a key factor in T cell activation, which the research will investigate as a new therapeutic target. In collaboration with Silvia Almeida and Vânia Cardoso from CoLAB AccelBio, experts in drug discovery, the team will work to identify drug candidates that modulate T cell response while preserving the immune system’s protective functions. This project aims to develop tools to reduce the side effects commonly associated with current treatments for infectious and inflammatory diseases, potentially leading to safer and more effective therapies.
This innovative approach holds promise for advancing targeted therapies that improve patient outcomes in managing complex immune-related conditions.
CoLAB AccelBio is one of the partners in the "Health from Portugal" Mobilizing Agenda, led by Prologica, and approved under the Portuguese Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan (recuperarportugal.gov.pt).
The main aim of the agenda is to position Portugal as a world reference hub in the design, development and production of advanced solutions for the health markets, based on innovation and technology. HfPT will focus on four areas: (i) the development of smart health solutions aimed at the digital medtech segment; (ii) the creation of a national smart health data repository of international reference; (iii) capacity building for the growth and sophistication of the clinical studies segment in the country; and (iv) the creation of solutions that valorise the potential of the ecosystem for collecting and benchmarking clinical data and costs associated with healthcare provision.

A agenda HfPT visa posicionar Portugal como um hub de referência mundial na conceção, desenvolvimento e produção de soluções avançadas dirigidas aos mercados da saúde, assentes na inovação e tecnologia. A HfPT incidirá em 4 áreas de aposta: (i) desenvolvimento de soluções smart health dirigidas ao segmento do medtech digital; (ii) criação de um repositório inteligente nacional de dados de saúde de referência internacional; (iii) capacitação para o crescimento e sofisticação do segmento dos estudos clínicos no país; e (iv) criação de soluções que valorizem o potencial do ecossistema de recolha e benchmark de dados clínicos e custos associados à prestação de cuidados de saúde.
